Modern heat pumps are highly efficient and environmentally friendly, but their controllers can often be confusing for homeowners. Many common issues like cold rooms, unexpectedly high energy bills, or frequent engineer callouts aren’t caused by faults in the system itself but by misunderstood or incorrectly set controls. For example, a misadjusted temperature setpoint or an improper schedule can make the house feel chilly even though the heat pump is working perfectly.

Room thermostat and weather compensation explained
Most heat pumps use a combination of a room thermostat and something called weather compensation. Understanding how they work together is the key to steady, comfortable heat.
Room thermostat control is what many people are used to. You set a room temperature, for example 20°C, and the system switches the heat pump on and off to try to hold that temperature. If it is not set up well, this can cause cycling, where the heat pump keeps stopping and starting.
Weather compensation looks at the outside temperature and adjusts the radiator or underfloor heating water temperature automatically. On colder days, the controller sends hotter water; on milder days, cooler water. That keeps the house more stable and improves efficiency, especially if the room thermostat is used more as a safety back-up than the main control.
Setpoint, curves and flow temperature limits
Heat pump controllers often talk about a setpoint and a heating curve, which can be confusing. The setpoint is usually a single target temperature, such as a room temperature or a fixed flow temperature, while the curve is a line that changes the flow temperature depending on outdoor conditions.
With weather compensation, you normally adjust the curve rather than a single setpoint. A higher curve makes the water leaving the heat pump hotter for a given outdoor temperature and can warm the house more quickly, but it may reduce efficiency. A lower curve improves efficiency, but if it is too low the house may never quite feel warm enough on colder days.
Flow temperature limit: the maximum water temperature the heat pump is allowed to produce for heating
Curve slope: how aggressively flow temperature rises as it gets colder outside
Curve shift: moves the whole curve up or down by a few degrees
Most homeowners only need to make small changes to the curve or its shift, not big jumps. Flow temperature limits are usually set by the installer to suit your radiators or underfloor heating and should not be adjusted wildly.
Timed schedules and setback temperatures
Your heating schedule tells the heat pump when the home should be at your normal comfort temperature and when it can be a bit cooler. Because heat pumps work best running steadily, large temperature swings are not ideal.
A setback temperature is a slightly lower temperature used at night or when you are usually out. Instead of turning the heating off completely, the system ticks along at, for example, 17°C instead of 20°C. This can save energy while avoiding the long reheat times and high flow temperatures that come from letting the house get very cold.
For hot water, there is usually a separate hot water schedule. The heat pump heats the cylinder at the times you are most likely to need it, such as early morning and evening. If hot water keeps running out, it can be a sign that the schedule, target temperature or cylinder size needs reviewing.
Hot water functions and legionella cycles
Hot water settings will normally include a target cylinder temperature and one or more time windows for heating. A higher cylinder temperature gives more usable hot water from the same tank, but can slightly reduce efficiency.
Most systems also have a legionella protection cycle. This runs weekly or fortnightly to raise the cylinder to a high temperature for a short time, to reduce the risk of bacteria. It may use an electric immersion heater. You might hear the system working harder during this cycle, and the energy use may spike briefly.
It is usually best to leave legionella programmes enabled, but you can ask your installer to check the timing so it does not happen when electricity is most expensive, if you are on a smart tariff.
Holiday and away modes
Holiday or away mode keeps the property protected without heating it to your normal comfort level. The controller holds a low background temperature, often around 10–15°C, and may reduce hot water production.
This is useful for winter trips, as it prevents pipes freezing while avoiding the cost of heating an empty house. Just remember to cancel holiday mode when you get home, and allow several hours for the property to warm back up.
Safe changes you can make
There are several adjustments most homeowners can safely try before calling an engineer, especially if comfort is not quite right. The key is to make small changes and then wait long enough to see the true effect.
As a general guide, it is sensible to:
Change room temperature or setback by no more than 0.5–1°C at a time
Adjust the heating curve or its shift in small steps, typically 1–2°C
Wait at least 24 hours in similar weather before judging a change
Only alter schedules by 15–30 minutes at first and see how the house responds
Keep a simple log of what you changed and when. That way, if you do need help later, your installer has a clear picture of what has already been tried.
Settings you should not touch
Most controllers have deeper installer or service menus behind a code or long press. These menus contain technical parameters that affect efficiency, reliability and in some cases safety.
You should avoid altering:
Installer menus that cover refrigerant pressures, pump speeds, compressor frequencies, safety limits or sensor calibration. The values here are chosen based on your specific system, pipework and radiators or underfloor design.

Common comfort problems and likely setting causes
House never really warms up
If rooms feel lukewarm even when the heating has been on for hours, the heating curve may be set too low, or the flow temperature limit may be capped too tightly. A very low setback or long off periods can also leave the building fabric cold.
Try raising the curve slightly or reducing the setback difference. If radiators are cool at the bottom or some rooms are much colder than others, balancing or system checks may be needed.
Rooms overheating or feeling stuffy
If the house often overshoots the set temperature, the curve or room setpoint may be too high, or the thermostat may be in a poor location, such as near a radiator or in direct sun. Long “comfort” periods without setback can also gradually nudge average temperatures up.
Lower the curve one small step and reduce the room setpoint by 0.5–1°C. Check that the main thermostat is in a typical lived-in room, away from heat sources and draughts.
System running almost constantly
With heat pumps, long run times are not always a fault. They are designed to run gently for many hours. It becomes a concern if rooms are too warm or bills are unexpectedly high.
In that case, look at reducing the heating curve or lowering the room setpoint slightly. If the controller is set to “constant” or “24 hour” comfort mode, consider introducing a modest overnight setback instead.
Noisy cycling on and off
Frequent starts and stops, with the heat pump clicking on and off every few minutes, usually hint at too high a flow temperature, a very tight room thermostat differential or hot water setpoints that are much higher than needed.
Reducing the curve, widening any “temperature differential” setting on the room stat and checking that radiators or underfloor loops are all open can help the system run more steadily and quietly.
Hot water runs out too quickly
If showers go lukewarm or you run out of hot water in the evening, your cylinder temperature or hot water schedule may not be matched to your usage. Extra-long baths or more people in the home than originally planned can also expose a small tank.
Check the hot water time periods cover your heaviest use and consider a small increase in cylinder temperature, staying within manufacturer guidance. If that does not help, the cylinder size or heat pump output for hot water may need review.

A good handover makes living with a heat pump much easier. When your system is installed or serviced, ask your installer to walk you through the key user controls and note down any recommended settings.
